This page for kids gives an overview of New Zealand’s ocean environment.
The New Zealand seas have around 15,000 species of sea creatures with about 7 being discovered every day so they think New Zealand has about 35,000 unknown species. New Zealand’s ocean have half of the world’s dolphins and whales and have the biggest variety of seabirds in the world. The NZ ocean is about 1000m deep.in most areas. Most areas of NZ are surrounded in water even mount Cook is surrounded in estuaries and rivers. Most marine environments have creatures like fish that will go to the beach and then go away again but some environments have creatures like crabs that will come then hide under rocks and stay. Nearly ⅖ of the world's sea creatures have been sighted in NZ’s and Australia's waters. But it's all polluted so help by recycling and putting rubbish in the bin.
